Longtime President/CEO of Midcoast Maine Community Action to Retire


Midcoast Maine Community Action announces that its President/CEO, Jessica Tysen, will retire on October 20, 2019, after 27 years of dedicated service to the Agency.

Tysen has led the organization for 25 of her 27 years, coming to MMCA (then known as Coastal Economic Development) in 1992 as Director of Job Training Programs, subsequently, Workforce Development. In 1994, she was appointed to the President/CEO position. During her tenure, Tysen played a critical role in helping the agency adapt to significant changes in regulations and funding related to delivery of services for children and families. In the process, she served as a champion for establishing policies that improved access to high quality early education for children and to other programs and resources that enable families to become self-sufficient. Prior to joining MMCA, she held leadership positions with the Indiana Hospital Association and provided policy analysis and lobbying for a variety of nonprofit health care and human service organizations.

In announcing her retirement to MMCA staff, Tysen said “I am very proud of our staff and the work you do to serve and improve the lives of families and individuals in the Midcoast region.  I am proud of the quality programs delivered to children and families by all of you, and I am proud of the advocacy we provide to ensure that our clients are connected to the services and benefits that will help them.  While I’ve had other jobs throughout my career, my work with all of you at this agency has been my life’s work.  I thank all of you and the MMCA Board of Directors for the support that has made this work so meaningful for me.”

As it looks toward the future, the MMCA Board of Directors welcomes Claire Berkowitz as the next President and CEO. Berkowitz has most recently served as Executive Director of the Maine Children’s Alliance, an organization that shares many of the same values and goals.


Midcoast Maine Community Action in Bath had an immediate opening for a Family Development Case Manager.  This is a full-time position and requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field, preferably with an LSW and one year in a related positon. This position is designed to assist families in identifying needs, goals and services to attain self-reliance. To this end the successful candidate will develop and monitor a family’s plan to obtain these goals.

We are looking for a person who has social service experience and has worked with low-income families.  This person must be able to develop a rapport with the family, as well as, maintain trust and respect.  The successful candidate will have knowledge of local housing and social service programs, as well as, have knowledge and understanding of all pertinent laws and regulation laws and regulations, including child abuse and neglect, duty to warn, etc.

This person should also have excellent oral and written communication skills. The demonstrated ability to work with computers and related software, including word-processing, spreadsheet applications, database and computer peripherals, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, the ability to organize paperwork to meet deadlines, and the ability to work as part of an integrated service team.

This is a full time position.

Head Start Case Manager

Responsibilities include recruiting eligible children; helping families to identify family goals, strengths, and coordinating resources; assisting parents in developing parent committees, attending meetings. Applicants must have considerable knowledge of social services available to low-income families; demonstrated ability to work in crisis situations; ability to work independently and as a team member; effective communication skills; must have driver’s license and reliable vehicle. Bachelor Degree in Social Work or related field is required. Position is 37.5 hours per week.
